Wi-Fi can feel like magic because there is no cable between your phone and the router. In reality, it is a radio communication system that lets compatible devices exchange data over the air.
At home, your internet service arrives through a connection from your internet service provider. Your modem or gateway connects that service to your local network, while a Wi-Fi router or access point provides the wireless connection your phone, laptop, TV and other devices use.

Wi-Fi uses radio waves
Wi-Fi sends information using radio waves. Your phone has a wireless radio and antenna, and the router has its own radio and antennas. When your phone requests a webpage, the data is broken into packets and transmitted wirelessly to the router.
The router then passes that traffic toward the internet. When the response comes back, the router sends the relevant data packets over the wireless connection to your device.
What does the router actually do?
A router is more than a box that creates a signal. It helps direct traffic between your local network and other networks. It also handles important jobs such as assigning local addresses and applying network rules.
That is why restarting a router sometimes fixes a problem even when your internet provider has not changed anything. The local network can be refreshed, temporary faults can clear, and devices can reconnect cleanly.

Why is Wi-Fi slower in some rooms?
Radio signals do not travel through every building material equally well. Distance matters, walls can weaken signals, and nearby networks can compete for airtime. The band and Wi-Fi standard being used also affect performance.
That is why router placement matters. A router hidden inside a cabinet at one end of a large home is usually a worse starting point than a router placed in a more central, open location.
Is Wi-Fi the same as the internet?
No. Wi-Fi is the wireless link inside your local network. The internet is the much larger network of networks beyond your home. You can have a Wi-Fi connection with no internet access—for example, if the router is working but the ISP connection is down.
